Moved site, external links not displaying when logged out

I moved a C5.7 site (5.7.4.2) to a different hosting space, copying code and database.
All looks good except that my external link navigation items aren't displaying when logged out. They display normally when logged in as administrator.
I tried editing a page in case I'd be given an "approve changes" dialog or something of the sort but no go. I tried re-saving the global stack that displays the navigation and approving that change. No difference. Finally, I added a new external link to the nav but when I logged out this no longer displayed.
Incidentally, I did clear my cache and turned all caching off for good measure.
Any ideas?

Why wouldn't certain links appear? One reason might be permissions for those pages and that was the case here. The links that were not showing had no viewing permissions (or editing permissions) set for any group.
BUT... there's still a mystery as to why. The links had worked just fine for some time. In addition to the move I had recently updated to the latest version of C5.
I have no idea on why things changed but I am reminded to look at the obvious stuff first.
