Page State "edit mode" not visible for the end user

Hi,

I just downloaded the concrete5 5.7 beta version. It seems that there is a lot of improvement and work done for this new futur version.

I regret to say that there seems also to be a loss of efficiency or simplicity for the end user.

For example, with the loss of the feature dotted lines around content areas in edit mode. Without this functionality the average user does not know if the page is published or has to be published. There is no indicator for it. (e. g. dotted lines or a visible button "publish").

the disappearance of the dotted lines in edit mode also makes the development of templates more difficult, for example with the margin and padding settings (no visual cues).

Another thing, maybe I have to get used to before, but to add a page or edit the settings in the 5.6.3 version just a click was needed. Now I have to search under 4 differents icons.

I'm a bit of concerns about these first observing, especially thinking I should explain it to my clients..

I just downloaded 5.7.0b1 and it seems there hasn't been a lot of improvements considering what the OP posted.

One issue is that many times I've had a page template that includes a sidebar which contains both Global and "normal" Area to give the user ability to add something to the sidebar page-specifically or to all pages using the template. It has been easy to teach the clients by saying the keyword Global to tell the difference between the areas. Now, when the user drags more content from the side panel, I guess there is no way to distinguish the areas from each other, or the only way is to memorize the order of areas by hovering over them in edit mode.

I'd like to see these two improvements:
1. When the user starts to drag a block from the side panel, make all the areas visible with green bars just like they are visible at the moment when you drag the content over them. This way the user would immediately see where he/she is able to add content. Also, show the Area name in the green bar to distinguish the areas from each other.

2. Add an optional "highlight editable areas" toggle button when in edit mode to allow the user to see the areas in pre-5.7 way.

There are lots of nice improvements in 5.7 but I feel that the ease of use and simplicity has taken some hit. I recall some statements about the edit UI that it will get some "love" from the core team and will be made better/easier to use, but so far I haven't seen much improvement.

I wonder if some developer will release "highlight editable areas in edit mode" package unless it's somehow implemented out-of-the-box... :)

Usually a global area name will be prefixed with the word 'sitewide' which distinguishes it from a single instance of an area which does not have the 'sitewide' prefix.
