Performance Issues with the Editor in 5.7

I am working on my first C5.7 site and generally really like it. BUT I've had an issue with performance. Quite frequently (every 5-10 minutes) I run into issues where the editor just hangs up. Sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes for several minutes. Can anyone point me to a discussion on how to optimize the site/server settings, etc... to help with performance? It is critical that I have a working demo to show a client by Friday of this week, and right now I'm seriously worried that I'll look like a fool if it hangs on me during the demo. Please respond.

We have multiple editors working on a 5.7.4 site and we have seen this behavior only on a Macbook Pro with the latest OSX release. I have not yet determined the root cause for the behavior, but it is frustrating and a disruption to those who are using Macs who need to author content. The problem appears to be more consistent with Safari, but also appears with Chrome on the Mac.

If you are a Mac user, my only suggestion is to run Parallels and use Windows for editing until the reason for this behavior is identified and fixed, or use a Windows PC or laptop for editing.

If you are a PC user, that would be helpful to know as the community works on this problem.

I am working on a Mac. I thought I eliminated that as a possibility yesterday when I pulled out a PC laptop and worked with it for a while and seemed to have the same problems. I'll try again and see if it is indeed better on a PC and let you know. Thanks for responding.

Okay, I've worked for a while now on a PC and in fact do not see the same issues. This is obviously a big issue for me since a Mac is my primary computer. It's yet to be seen if that's the case for my clients. I hope this is resolved soon. I wonder if I should submit this as a bug somewhere (if you haven't already.)

We have not had any problems with editing issues on PCs with multiple editors.

Of course, I am stating the obvious here, if your network connection is unstable, that may be a contributing factor. Also, determine if there is any content on the page that is huge, such as images that have been uploaded in their full resolution size.

I have not yet reported it as a bug because I don't have enough insight into causative factors. I'd rather provide useful details to Andrew and the community rather than a generic "Editor freezes on Mac with latest OSX".

I am actively working to diagnose the issue and hope to have some insight soon so I can report the bug or report the proposed fix.

We extended the Redactor editor to support font colors and font backcolor using a custom plugin and the Spectrum color picker and thought it might be related.

Is your Redactor editor the standard editor without any custom plugins, or have you enabled any of the additional plugins provided in the Dashboard interface?

I don't believe we've installed any custom plugins on the site at all yet.

We found an issue on the hosting end where the memory limit for C5 was set at 256M. We upped it to 1G and that really improved the performance on the PC side, and a slight improvement on the Mac but I'm still having issues where the editing of sites becomes almost impossible after a period of time. If I ping the site I on my Mac I show dropped packets pretty regularly. I can ping other sites at the same datacenter and have them side by side, but don't see the same dropped packets.

Any information you can send my way that might help us resolve this would be greatly appreciated.
