Problem assigning edit permissions for one block on a page

I gave permissions for a group to edit one block on a page, but when I log in as a user in that group, I don't have the ability to edit anything - no edit controls in the top left and the one block isn't editable. I tried giving the group edit contents privileges for the page, but then they could edit everything on the page. What am I doing wrong?

If one or more blocks on a page have "edit block" permissions assigned to a group or user, should those users have an edit (pencil) control at the top left of the page? They don't have that for me and I can't find any documentation showing what I might be doing wrong.

The user needs to have permissions to edit the page also.

Thanks, Hutman. I’m creating a directory where users will be able to edit the content of their own directory pages. There are 20 blocks on the page and they need to not be able to edit the 10 labels at all and edit only the text content of the 10 content blocks, not the styles. When I assign a group to the most restrictive edit access at the page level “Edit Contents”, each block on the page is given 5 permissions. I can edit permissions for the main section and the layouts inherit these, but the blocks within the layouts don’t. I’m able to remove permissions for each block, but it’s very cumbersome (90 removals) and will need to be done for each directory page as the users are different. Is there a way to flag a group in the database to have edit permissions for the page (so they have the ability to get into edit mode) and then just add the specific block permissions they should have, which would be “Edit Area Contents” for 10 blocks?

Does anyone know whether I can manually set a flag in the database to give a user Edit privileges for a page without assigning specific block privileges? Through the interface, assigning "Edit Contents" assigns 5 different types of privileges for each of the 20 blocks on the page. I'd like users to have "Edit Area Content" for 10 of the blocks and only that, which requires 90 permissions be removed for each directory page, of which there will be many.

I've also noticed that when in edit mode, if a user doesn't have any edit privs for particular blocks, it displays "Empty Column 1 Area" above the block for each of them throwing the formatting off.
