Slow loading website

I'm experiencing a very slow-loading Concrete5.7 website. I've been through many volleys with tech support at my client's web host (ipage.com) and they assure me there's nothing wrong on their end, so now I'm trying to go through my install and see if anything's amiss.
I'm building the site in a subdirectory of my client's hosting account and plan to repoint the main domain at the subdirectory when it's time to go live. I followed the direction of another user on this system for cloning the Elemental Theme to its own directory and have used that to build the site as it's my first serious attempt at a C5 site.

I notice the PHP version is 5.3.29 and Concrete recommends a minimum of 5.3.3. Is this a problem? The host offers 5.5, but if I switch, it breaks the site and I'd like to know if that's an obvious issues before I go that route.
Also, there are so many overrides. Is this normal? Can it be minimized?

I'm building the site in a subdirectory of my client's hosting account and plan to repoint the main domain at the subdirectory when it's time to go live. I notice the PHP version is 5.3.29 and Concrete recommends a minimum of 5.3.3. Is this a problem? The host offers 5.5, but if I switch, it breaks the site and I'd like to know if that's an obvious issues before I go that route.
Also, there are so many overrides. Is this normal? Can it be minimized?
Any help is appreciated, and if there's any more information you need please let me know.

Thanks for your response and for checking the site. I've suspected the shared hosting, but the host is the client's choice and I'll need to provide some comparisons to make a case to switch. I have a 'testing' C5 install on my own host that runs quite fast. I'll do as you suggest and move this site to that server to compare.
Perhaps a silly question, but if I remove plugin packages and revert to the default Elemental theme, will I lose content? I feel like the theme change would be fine, but if I remove my add-ons that were used to add content, I feel like I'd have to replace all of it. Not true?
When I switch to PHP 5.5 via the host's control panel, I get an 'Unexpected Error' "mkdir(): Permission denied" and nothing works. I suspect there's something I'd have to edit in the php.ini, but as I mentioned before, I wasn't going to go down that road if the PHP version isn't causing the bottleneck.

yes - if you remove plugins you'll lose the content that's in them. If I were worried about plugins but unable to get any metrics from anywhere I'd take a full backup of the site and then remove them one by one - testing all the way, but secure in the knowledge I had my backup.
Changing theme should not lose your content as the various areas etc persist even if they do not exist in your new theme. However - I would still always take a backup. In fact, I always take a backup before introducing any change to the code or the data (before installing / removing a plugin etc). It's a pain but I've found time and time again that those few minutes backing up can save you so much time and pain.
I'd ask your host about php5.5 - what you are seeing there is some kind of permissions error, but you should be able to run concrete5 happily with php5.5 and php5.5 is faster.
You can find out how many sites are on a server using a tool like:

Of course this is really sites on the same ip address so it might not represent a single server and I don't know how fresh the data is but it gives you an idea of how many sites / who you are sharing your host's resources with (this can sometimes be a real eye-opener).

I just tested the site a few times and your time to first byte was never shorter than 2 seconds.
I only had a quick look but your page is not heavy and I didn't see anything that stands out (would be worth a detailed check though). There are always optimisations that can be done but there didn't look to be any huge issues.
My first instinct would be the hosting - you see slow times very often with shared hosting.
I checked and there are at least another 679 sites on your server/ip (doesn't necessarily mean anything but you are sharing resources with them all).
If you remove any plugins and revert to the default elemental theme is there any difference.
Are you able to test on a different host/server?
What happens when you switch to PHP 5.5?
