Upgrading using a central core

I've just downloaded 5.7.2.1 to uprgrade from 5.7.2 - if I have simply replaced the core concrete directory on my server (that I'm symlinking to) - do I have to visit a certain page to get the database to upgrade, or am I better off putting the new directory in an updates directory and doing an update from the dashboard?

I haven't played with 5.7.x to say for sure, but historically you could replace the core then navigation to /index.php/tools/required/upgrade
