New Area Splitter Block

Hi guys!
I've made a new block that allows you to split an area into any amount of subareas you want. Subareas behave exactly like areas, so you can add any number of blocks to a subarea, and move them around.
You can see a working example here (although without looking at the backend it doesn't impress much):
http://c5sandbox.codium.co.nz

I was looking for a free screen capture software for the mac to be able to post a video... but couldn't find. If you want to play with it contact me through my profile and I'll give you edit access to the page.

Let me know what you think before I offcially submit to the marketplace.

Cheers,

Matt

yeah, this is cool.
in section 3 you've that page list block, with page not found and page forbidden.
I got this error too, since the latest stable concrete version, wondering if this is a bug or what?

Hey.. this is AMAZING~!

This was long-time headache for CMS designers...

You actually made super-cool block~!

Good job.

About the screen capture software for Mac... Check this out

Any vid screen capturing app recommendations?
http://www.concrete5.org/index.php?cID=13377...

Franz uses ScreenFlow
http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm...

I use iShowU HD Pro + Final Cut Pro to make my Japanese tutorials.
http://store.shinywhitebox.com/...

As ScottC mentioned Camtasia Studio is good one for Windows. One of my Japanese concrete5 team is using Camtasia to create more screencast as well.

I was never be able to find a good and free Mac software. I ended up buying iShowU HD Pro.. and I like it.

Seems you have an admirator.

For myself, I think is a great idea, a very usefull block.

Hope to see it very soon at the MarketPlace!

Big thanks for your contribution. It helps greatly the simple user like me.

Superb work matt, as a designer having to set up pages and page templates for each multi column block was a nightmare let me know when this is available and I'll be purchasing!

;-P

I would love to get a hold of this block too! My only gripe is I started one this week for a template I was working on.

Any idea when this could be available?

I was experimenting with a grid system along these lines (http://www.concrete5.org/index.php?cID=8825... ), but it didn't allow you to split an existing block. I'm looking forward to seeing how you handled that.

I want to wait untill after you guys saw the video to get some feedback before I post to the marketplace.

That would be nice. If it costs and isn't unreasonable, I will still get it. Will save a lot of design time.

this block very "save" a lot of design time. You dont have editiing .css for getting block positions. :)

brilliant!

not on vacation yet, but I'm totally slammed with work right now, and in the process of moving out of my place. I will try to get this up there in the next week.

we're lookin at it. this one obviously raises a lot of concerns in my mind about compatibility with the rest of the add-ons out there. Assuming we're not creating a environment where someone who isn't a developer and adds this thing is going to break other stuff they've got from the marketplace, the answer is "very soon"

if there is some risk, we'll add it but we'll create a "might be a bit sticky" type of note/category in the marketplace which is on our radar anyway...
bryanlewis replied on at Permalink Reply

good idea! about the "might be a bit sticky" blocks. Thanks for the reply!

Hi Franz,
Regardless if my block is risky or not I was thinking anyway that there should be a place in the marketplace where people can submit their (free) blocks and they become instantly available without approval.
Blocks in that section don't necessarily need to follow the submission guidelines, unless you're serious about your block being in the "official" marketplace.
There are a lots of great blocks is this forum buried in posts, links and attachments, and this would be a way of centralizing them so they don't get lost.
What do you think ?
frz replied on at Permalink Reply
frz
thats where we're heading.. the marketplace being more like slashdot in terms of thresholds and whatnot.
Aurora replied on at Permalink Reply
Only moments ago, I was thinking how great something like this would be. This means both a search box and a login box can be at the top of a home page without pushing everything else down to an awkwardly low level, meanwhile leaving a huge open space to the right of the stacked features.

Nice-thanks for thinking of it.

The tab and accordion thing is great too!
Do you need php to be able to create those "effects" or is it html and css? Sorry if thats a stoopid question.

Its a great block and I'll be in like Flynn for this one, but doing the tabbed panels and the accordion thing easily would make it a contender for the most brilliant thing in the world ever.

How about sliding panels, now there cool....

Hi Nige, the block comes with 3 templates. The basic div based columns, the tabs and the accordion. The tabs and the accordion were taken straight out of the jquery UI sampler.
You do need a bit of php knowledge the create your own templates, but if you follow any of the 3 provided examples it's really straight forward.

it's an astounding coincidence that this turned up just as I was struggling to work out how to do this.

Is there any update to when this will arrive in the marketplace?

I am looking forward to it.

Hi I'm wondering if these blocks will be sold in a developer style lisence?

I'm wanting it to pay $x amount of dollars and have the code for as many sites as i want.

Kind Regards
Greg

Hi Greg, you can see Franz' official thoughts on the matter in this post:
http://www.concrete5.org/index.php?cID=18680...
You should probably add your comment there...
As developers, if we choose to sell something through the marketplace then we're tied to the marketplace rules. So far there is no option for bulk pricing, but if enough people ask for it, it may happen, you never know.

Hi all, the new version of the Area Splitter is out now.
I've listened to all the requests and suggestions and added a few cool customization options and a table template. I haven't updated the screencast, screenshots or demo site, but those of you who bought it should be able to download the latest version now.
Enjoy!

Fantastic tool! Very useful.
One question:
how to insert multiple jQuery UI accordion options ? like for instance { active: 2 } and
{ collapsible: true } if I simply put both it doesn't work. Thanks
Styves replied on at Permalink Reply
Styves
Exemple:

{autoHeight:false, collapsible:true, active: false}

Cheers!
damianocroci replied on at Permalink Reply
Thanks! Any way to use also complex option like: { cookie: { expires: 30 } ?
matogertel replied on at Permalink Reply
matogertel
Should work the same way.
If it doesn't you can always add it manually to the accordion template. To do that just copy packages/matogertel_area_splitter/blocks/matogertel_area_splitter/templates/accordion to blocks/matogertel_area_splitter/templates/accordion and then edit blocks/matogertel_area_splitter/templates/accordion/view.php
damianocroci replied on at Permalink Reply 1 Attachment
To work the jquery.cookie.js plugin (available into jquery-ui 1.7.2 pack into the 'development bundle') is needed, I was able add it modifying the controller.php but as I'm not expert with jquery-ui not sure used the best way. I suggest you add this functionality to Area Splitter, very interesting to keep the last Tab selected in a page. Try athttp://www.croci.it/portfolio/ to see the effect

Love this block, even with the new layout options in 5.4, this thing is still helpful for the tabs and expanding options.

I have a question though.. is there an easy way of linking to a specific tab?
matogertel replied on at Permalink Reply
matogertel
Very simple, exit edit mode, right click on the tab you want and copy the link!

How to update from an older version organized as a block type to the new one organized as a package ?
C5 do not see it as an upgrade , if I try to install I got an error because the matogertel_area_splitter is already defined. If I remove the older version and install the new 2.07 all the pages content created with area splitter disappear... Please help
I can't upgrade C5 to 5.4.1 without upgrade the area splitter too

Hi Damiano, the Area Splitter as all the other c5 addons in the marketplace, has alwasy been a package. Even if it's just a single block.
Which version are you using?
damianocroci replied on at Permalink Reply
Now I'm confuesd... I believe it was v. 2.05 and I can't figure out why it is installed under the blocks folder instead of packages !
Any suggestion how to solve ?
damianocroci replied on at Permalink Reply
I solved the problem un-installing the old version, installing the 2.07 and making manual modification to the BlockTypes table btID field. Thanks
