I'm looking for a VPS hosting server for installing & testing Concrete5 CMS.

Any recommendation other than known hosts. My precise requirement if high performance.

I've had good results from a digital ocean $10 a month VPS using a ubuntu lemp droplet.
Quick and easy setup + quick to re-image if needed.

@AndyJ

Was there a lot of extra work or challenges in getting concrete5 to work with nginx?

Did you notice any substantial differences in performance using nginx over Apache?

Regarding the use of a DigitalOcean VPS, did you notice any substantial performance differences over a high quality shared host?

hi MrK,
getting Concrete5 to work with Nginx is pretty elementary.

As for speed - I was able to run the elemental theme and a custom theme and test it to all A standard using page speed test. On pingdom using Amsterdam I believe this translated to about a 350 millisecond page load - or 99th percentile. I did not test under any load.

Important to remember here I was using full caching and running through cloudflare.

Running the same template on a shared hosting account from Heart Internet I was unable to get the Time To First Byte below 220ms. That said the page load speed using Heart was generally in the 650-900ms range but a lot more variable as regards falling outside of yhat range.

I have recently been trying out other Shared hosts. I found TSOHost (who have a very good rep) had problems running 5.7 due to problems with explicit file locking on their VPS - I didn't try very hard to get around this and binned them quickly.

Smart web hosting gives consistent ttfb of 70ish ms on their shared hosting platform and page load times are looking good so far - but I have not done too juch with them yet.

As for Digital Ocean - I don't think I'd consider them for a production environment but just for ease of spinning up an instance for testing they're great.

If you decide to give them a go message me and I think I can share my C5 on nginx image straight to you.

Hello Andy,

I just finished a course from courses.nickjanetakis.com on securing server with Let's Encrypt (very good) and he used nginx in his demos. If you still have an DO image you can share I would like to check it out, especially if you had phpMyAdmin working on it.

In any case, your reply was helpful to me.

I'm looking for Managed VPS and unfortunately DigitalOcean offers unmanaged servers..

Has anyone heard about servopia.com Managed Cloud Hosting? Any experience with them for Concrete5?

PS: I'm going to try their 7-days trial to check how it goes!
