Hi, I have built a C5 website on our holding server, but now its finished (www.medcomstore.com/C5) I need to move it to the actual server where its going to live - How do I go about doing this ? Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Like the above poster, I have finally managed to get a prototype site up and running. Despite some initial glitches, C5 now seems to be living up to much of its promise. I'd like to move the prototype to a real domain name and go public--heck, it would even be free promotion for C5, since I mention it in my site!

Only problem is... there is basically NO info(that I can find) on how to move my site. Apparently I have to export some portions of the database. What portions? How many poorly organized posts on the help forums must I browse on the off chance I might find useful info?

This seems like one of _the_ most fundamental questions a user will have starting with C5. Do you think a tutorial might be in order? I do! Thanks for listening.

Sounds like you've got some strong ideas. i'd love it if you put a tutorial together so we could post it to the site.

..its amazing how hard it is to allocated limited time when you've chosen to give the product away for free...

That being said..
yes you export your tables, upload your files, import your database.. pretty typical stuff for moving a site

here's a thread about it

Perhaps before you guys decided to give your product away, you should have thought about other options for users to support you besides offering hosting. I personally would much rather pay a nominal amount for your product and have some basic documentation than be told where I should relocate a bunch of existing sites belonging to diverse users.

I am willing to write a tutorial on moving a site. First, however, it seems rather important that I have the faintest clue of how to do it. I am on a 21kbaud dialup connection. For me to experiment repeatedly with installing a 3+MB package is extremely frustrating. I already went through that when trying to fix the "no styles problem" with your last RC. I have no way to know that the database contains no location-specific information and that I can export it and import it to a new site. The one posting I found on the topic was certainly not very enlightening.

I did post to "the village" my findings that your package would work on 1and1.com after beating my head against a 21kbaud wall to make it work. I thought I had posted further details on how I did it, but now that I think of it, I believe I lost my internet connection in the middle of doing so, and it was gone.

I'm very interested in what the support you're talking about would look like.

As it is, we offer hosting for a mere $15/month. That's pretty nominal. We also have a services partner program that an individual can join for $185/year. What type of support are you looking for and what would you be willing to spend?

I certainly understand the frustrations that come from living live behind a 2400 baud modem, and I applaud your efforts, I am no more super-human than you however. We have our own commitments and challenges, I fail to make the connection that because we were willing to give something away that used to cost money, we need to solve every potential problem someone might run into when they use it.

Help me help you. What are you thinking of when you speak of nominal amount for support?

I now have a tutorial on how to (theoretically) get C5 working on 1and1 shared hosting. I will be happy to email it to you for inclusion in your village.

I was thinking I would happily contribute $100 to C5 for what I have seen so far, if there were some reasonable documentation for how to get it set up and make basic changes to themes, pages, etc. I'm afraid I don't see that right now. I personally don't want to get locked into paying ongoing fees of $185 a year to be a member, when my needs may never advance much beyond what C5 can do right now.

As to your hosting fees: I have about a dozen sites I have set up for people using cheap hosting, including 1and1 at about $4 a month. The hassle of moving all these sites, and getting the owners to change billing info, domain registrations, etc. so that they can pay several times as much just isn't worth it. All I'm saying is that your "one size fits all" solution of "well just host with us" may not fit all your prospective users, and as marketers of your product you need to understand that, not fight it.

You might find that a couple days spent writing basic tutorials would pay off in making people like me go away :) Maybe not, though.

Please let me know how I can forward my tutorial.

1. Export and backup the database.
2. Transfer the files from the current server to the new server.
3. Modify config/site.php in this way:

Change BASE_URL to the new base domain of the new server
If the site is not at the root of the domain, change DIR_REL to be the path to the c5 install.

So, if you're site is athttp://www.mydomain.com/

you want BASE_URL = "http://www.mydomain.com"

and DIR_REL to be blank.

If your site is athttp://www.mydomain.com/c5/ you want it to say

BASE_URL =http://www.mydomain.com
DIR_REL = "/c5"

That's all you should have to do. Links should be automatically generated correctly to your updated domain.

Hi andrew,

I did exactly what you say in your last post.
My database is well imported (i see it in phpMyAdmin), but i just don't see the right content in the moved website (i just see the default c5 content, just like if it was a first install).
Any idea ?

Thanks !!

Morning Andrew,

if we are moving our site from the developers server, onto our own company network, do we need to buy a public domain online, or can we just set whatever domain we like as long as it matches with our sql database?

Thanks!
