A way to allow a logged on user to edit their data

Is there a block or some core feature in 5.8 that would give me the basics to create a page where the logged on user can edit their data?

If you're referring to the user being able to edit their account information (and other custom attributes), then yes, C5 has a built-in way to do this.

You'll need to enable public profiles in the dashboard. They will then be able to access their profile where they can edit their info.
