Admin login suddenly not recognizing username or password

Last week everything was fine with this site I've been working on (c5 version 5.6.3.2), I could log in to edit it no problem. Suddenly this week it refuses to recognize my username or password. I enter my email to reset the password, and it says an email was sent but they never arrive. Anyone have a clue what could be going on or how to fix it?

I am able to access the database directly, so I tried going in there and creating a new user with username and password, but it won't recognize those to log in, either, and again, password reset email never arrives.

The last thing in the blog (isn't it always the last!) mentions looking in your DB Log folder to physically see the contents of the email that was generated. I find it easier to copy/paste that link to reset the password.... no new user need be created.

The username was not one that I recall created, but oh well! I'm in again.
