Cannot Add Photos

Permalink 1 user found helpful
I can no longer add photos to any of the galleries I have installed:@ Galleria Image Gallery, Slideshow, Simple Image Gallery, Sortable Image Gallery and Amiant Image Gallery.

We have recently moved ur site to a new host but everything else seems to be working just fine.

Any ideas? I would add a log but I am not sure where to get them.

When you say you can't add an images. Do you mean you cant add already existing images (from the file manager).

OR...

You cant add any images from your computer to the file manager?

Apologies. I can upload photos no problem. I just can't add photos to a gallery, slideshow, etc. I wonder whether it is a permissions thing but I am a bit of a novice when it comes to the behind the scenes stuff.
As I said, existing galleries created before the move still work fine (including the one where someone uploaded and added over 400 photos!).

PLEASE:I need some serious help on this. I have just discovered that I also cannot add things into some other blocks. I am getting worried.

I've just tried to add an HTML block for a PayPal button. I pasted the code in and when I save the block the block is empty! the code has disappeared and was not saved along with the block. I tried amending an existing code and when I updated it the whole code had disappeared.

This is also happening with the photos. I choose photos from a set already uploaded and click ok. The photo album is b;ank and when I edit it again there are no files listed. It all seems to be related to not being able to add content.

May be a silly question but have you tried clearing the cache in the dashboard?

@MikeS,
It really sounds like you have a big emergency with terrible consequences if you don't get it fixing immediately. You might want to look into finding some professional assistance if things are that important and dire.

That said, let's try to get a little more information so that someone might be able to give you some suggestions. The best way for someone to be able to help you is to give very detailed and specific information.

1. What process did you use to copy your site over? Be specific. This part should be 4 or 5 sentences at least and talk about the database and the file transfer.

2. What version of php are you running? You can ask your hosting provider if you don't know.

3. Let's pick Simple Image Gallery and describe exactly what happens when you attempt to add a photo.
- Do you get the edit dialog?
- When you add a photo what happens? Be specific. This should be at least 2-3 sentences.

Quick things to try in the meantime.
1. Disable Pretty URLs
2. Rename the .htaccess file to anything else.
3. Clear the Cache
4. Check the permissions on the files/ directory

Thanks for your replies.

1. I'm afraid I did not copy the site myself. I struggled when I tried and so the owner of the previous host (parent of an ex-scout) kindly did it. Although I will go back and ask him if I have to, I would prefer to explore other posibilities before doing so

2. What version of php are you running?

2.The version PHP is 5.3.8

3. Let's pick Simple Image Gallery and describe exactly what happens when you attempt to add a photo.
 - Do you get the edit dialog?
 - When you add a photo what happens? Be specific. This should be at least 2-3 sentences.

3. Ok. With Simple Image Gallery i see the edit dialog. All the boxes are pre-filled in - columns, width, height, etc. I am able to choose the file set. The file set I choose is one with only 4 photos - all jpg files have a size of between 300Kb and 400Kb. The photos can be viewed in File Manager and I found, from the propeties, where they reside on the server. The files on the server have a permissions of 644 but all of the folders and sub folders where this is stored have 755.
When I click Add on the Simple photo Gallery the edit box disappears and I am taken back to the page in eit mode. The block is empty but I can click on it and choose edit. When I edit the block the file set box says "choose file set" and the othr boxes, which had been pre-filled in, are now empty.
I located all the photo files on the server and changed he permissions from 644 to 755 and tried again. Same thing happened: was able to choose the file set but the block seemed to loose the info when Add was clicked.

Others:
I have cleared the cache
Pretty URLs have never been enabled.
.htaccess was renamed. a new one was created automatically.
I do think that this is a permissions thing. So where do I find out which files & folders should be read/write as opposed to just read?

Really grateful for any help

What version of C5 are you running? - older C5 releases had issues with PHP 5.3

Please post your debug environment.

From what you're describing, it sounds like you're getting a JavaScript error when trying to add/edit blocks to your page.

Do you see any JS warnings? If you haven't done so already, use Firefox and install the Firebug addon - this makes spotting JS errors much easier.

Hi Jero

No Javascript warnings in Firebug and I've double checked only one version of JQuery is loaded and only one version of Fancybox.

If I remove the block completely from the template, the page renders fine. As soon as I put it back, it stops processing the page after it includes the gallery block.

There are no errors at all, either PHP or JavaScript. I can edit the Gallery block but if I select a File Set then no images appear in the gallery preview - even though the images appear fine in the File Manager.

Here's the environment:

OK. It appears that everyone is stumped! Like me.

Well, I have some additional info which may throw some light on where the problem might lie:

I just tried adding an event using Simple Events. I added the the event title, the date to and date from, start and end time. I also added text into the event summary text area and saved it. Lo and behold, the title, dates & times had diasappeared and yet the event summary text WAS THERE!! When I went back in to edit it all the event entries I had put in had gone with the exception of the text. Not only that but the dates, which previouslly had defaulted in todays date, now defaults in i January 1970! and the drop down box for years only went as far as 1980 (although it did allow me to type in todays date.

How weird is that? it loses some of the info but keeps the text in the text box.

I am the first to admit that I am out of my depth here. Please can someone look at this and help?

sorry i am not a hosting guy but i've always found that you need 777 on the files directory and recursively down to any directories inside of that folder(pretty important as the files are created off of a timestamp).

755 might work again since hosting isn't my cup of tea (kind of a commodity thing) but i think 777 is the absolute easiest thing to try first

Another thing to try after this is uploading an incredibly small file, like 6kb or something to make sure you aren't hitting the max post upload size or something like that.

I have a similar issue after moving to a new host. The only difference is the previous host used PHP 5.2 and the new one is on PHP 5.3.

I've copied the files from the old host and preserved all the permissions and I've exported the SQL schema and imported it into the new site.

Any page where I have a gallery, processing of the page stops at the block where Simple Image Gallery or Fancybox Gallery loads, see:

http://www.sharktours.co.za/lutwala-indonesia/gili-trawangan-indone...

Compared to the old site:

http://sharktours.tlloyd.com/lutwala-indonesia/gili-trawangan-indon...

... which loads fine.

I'm really stumped on this and would appreciate any help if you did manage to resolve your problem ?

Thanks,

Tim

Hey tiloyduk,
It looks like you have an php error occurring right at the beginning of the simple image gallery block. I imagine you php setup is not showing errors. It would probably help a lot if you enabled errors on the php 5.3 server so we can see the error.

I would make sure you copied all the old files to the new server and that you have fully cleared the site cache.
