Community Store addon - Paypal account

Hi guys,

i m planning to use this nice addon to have a shop section on my site, i dont know if that is a usefull information regarding my coming questions but my products will be downloadable files after payment, without any shipping options at all.

Since i never used Paypal and have no idea if a standard account is enough to have a working community store, i would really appreciate some inputs from existing users.

Can i use Community store with a standard free Paypal account?
Is there any limitation compared to Pro account ?
what are your best advises ?

Thanks in advance !

Hi Matt,
You can use a free Paypal account but I would recommend using something else. I usually recommend Stripe.

First, because you want to sell digital products, Paypal can be a problem. The way it works, someone clicks on the pay button and gets redirected to Paypal. There they confirm the transaction. Then they are redirected to your site where typically you give them access to the files they just bought. But at this point, you may or may not have received confirmation from Paypal that the transaction was successful.

One big problem with Paypal free account is that you have to wait for the confirmation and it can take up to 24 hours so you are in a situation where you either give the file without knowing if you got paid or you ask the buyer to wait and that's bad user experience.

Second, if you go over a certain amount sold, Paypal will most likely ask you to switch to a different account type.

On the other hand, with Stripe, the user buys directly from your website using their credit card, without going elsewhere. You get confirmation instantly so you can deliver the files right away.

Last but not least, they do not ask you to be a registered business or have a business bank account. And they will transfer your money to your bank account automatically every week.

To register is free and, like Paypal, and If memory serves they take money on each transaction: 2.9% + 30 cents.

hey Nour,
Once again thanks for the help !
Your answer is full of good tips.

Just one point, do you think that using Stripe gives the same credibility/secure feeling as Paypal does (as a widely used and trusted payment method) from the user point of view ?

What are the main risks or causes for the Paypal transaction to be unsuccessful ?

It is true that many sites prefer offering Paypal alongside the credit card option just in case some people feel safer like that.

I had clients who switched to Stripe from Paypal and never regretted it. They had the occasional request about Paypal but not enough to concern them.

The way Paypal works is it will pay using what's on your Paypal account but if there's not enough it will get money from your bank account directly. That's where things can go wrong or get slow.
Also if I remember well Paypal now allows people with no Paypal account to pay through their services but I am not sure that's possible with a free account or how it works but I'd guess that might slow things down as well.

Thanks Nour !
I think i will go with your recommendation.

About Community Store addon, there is something that i m not sure about :
Installing only the community store package doesnt provide any payment gateway (Paypal or Stripe) ?
I have to install the choosen payment gateway package too ? or is it bundled someway in the community store main package ?

yes, you have to download them and install them separately. And make sure you download them from the "release" tab, not from the main window.
