How do I pick up if a product has been bought already? - ecommerce

Hi
Can anyone assist me in the following? Or point me in the right direction.
I want to show a custom message in place of the Add to Cart Button if the product listed has been purchased already. If it hasn't then the Add to Cart button must appear.
This is for a gift registry. There will be multiple registries. so the function above needs to be specific to a registry.

No response on this? I'm pretty annoyed with the lack of support for Core Commerce. I could not get this gift registry functional. It doesn't update the gift registry (remove the items purchased) when a product is purchased. Did you have any luck?

Hi, I had to get custom development done on the registry, we basically reworked the entire thing, from how the user creates the registry to how the products are listed. Now when a buyer purchases off a registry the product gets greyed out and also specifies on the receipt which registry it was taken off. I can send you the details of the developers I worked with if you are interested?
