Is 5.6 still being maintained?

Hi

I just noticed there was a recent update to C5 5.6 (Feb 2015). So, is 5.6 still being maintained?

Because the lack of easy upgrade path from 5.6 to 5.7, I decide to build my most recent two projects in 5.7 - but kind of regretting it, because of the learning curve it's added to the projects, don't have access to all the addons I want to use, etc.

But then I noticed 5.6 is still being updated... so I could have probably used it until an upgrade path was figured out... guess I am experiencing a bit of "buyers remorse" if you know what I mean...

So, just wondering what is the plans with 5.6? I guess, no new features being added, but continual bug fixes for a while??

Cheers

Hi,
when 5.7 was released the core team stated there was a commitment to maintain 5.6 for 12 months.

That basically takes us up to November(ish) of this year - plus there will still be life left in it after that point (IMO).

There have still been a few themes and add-ons added to 5.6 since the release of 5.7 as well as a maintenance release.

I haven't built any client sites out in 5.7 yet although I'm about to start in the next month or so for new clients. I don't see any rush to push current clients who are on 5.6 to 5.7 at the moment.

We've updated that commitment to 12 months from when the community runs out of steam. At the moment, Remo and gang have been doing a great job so yer fine for the foreseeable future on either version:

Yeah - other than exporting/importing content, I don't think you'll see a real upgrade path from 5.6 to 5.7

Yeah, there's a learning curve with 5.7, but nothing radical. Just like a new car, driving is pretty much the same even if you're not used to where cruise control is.

I would keep your current clients on 5.6 and maintain them with any maintenance updates. However, I wouldn't waste your time and put new clients/sites on 5.6. Dig in and deal with 5.7, it's nicer once you get over the learning curve.

There's less blocks in the MP for it, sure, but I know many developers accept block requests (example:http://addons.market.isitvivid.com/block-requests-form/... )

I don't see why people are upset that they can't update to 5.7. There's no REASON to if their site is currently stable.

I guess, I am used to updating web apps when new versions come out. Staying in old versions is security risk - that kind of mentality. I guess previous experience with old Joomla sites getting hacked, old Wordpress sites hacked, makes me cautious. Never had a C5 site hacked though! :)

The two sites I built in 5.7 were a bit painful, in all honesty -- kept running into bugs/errors, new ways of doing things that just slowed me down and I felt unproductive, like I was spending way too much time troubleshooting, didn't have access to the full suite of add-ons that I usually rely on... then asking developers if they are updating them and either getting no reply, or just plain "no".

But I did come to the decision the other week that I still preferred C5 over the other opensource CMSs I know of. Main reason is probably the (generally) clean HTML output and that I have pretty much full control there, being able to edit Custom Templates to get it my way, etc.

Just some features don't work how I want them to (e.g. Global Areas/Stacks, but they never worked how I wanted them to), and I am not fluent enough in PHP to change it... And maybe I am too old to change tools now :)

Cheers

Why worry, considering that C5.org is still running 5.5.2?
