Trying a clean install on hostgator, PHP set to 5.5, all requirements check green, empty database is present.
Click install and progress bar shows up for about 2 seconds then this:

that's probably because your server doesn't give PHP enough memory. Try installing the empty site or increase the memory limit.

Thank you. But I get the same results installing an empty site. My memory is set at 256M.

I haven't tested it, but I've read that password with special characters are causing problems. Would be bad if that's correct... Does you user, password or database name contain anything but numbers and letters?

Oh, well that is bad if true. Host prefixes db names with an underscore. Nothing I can do about that. I might have to wait for a fix I guess.

I had the same issue (not Hostgator though). Upping the memory and removing special characters and the problem went away. The underscore wasn't the problem,. In fact, I can't be sure special characters had anything to do with it. I haven't tested since, and am assuming it was the memory. However, I do suspect special characters (other than the underscore) may have played a part. I'll test later.
