500 Internal Server - on hosting where other sites are fine

I am almost embarrassed to post this, but I am very confused.
I run ~50 sites using concrete5. I have installed all of them without any problem...until yesterday.
I went through the normal procedure but when I typed the root domain I didn't get an installation screen, but a 500 Internal Sever error.
I run a VPS and have a shared hosting facility. I run sites on both and have encountered this problem on both.
As an experiment, I created a directory public_html/test within a user account that is successfully running 8.4.4, i.e PHP and MySQL are all good, and I experienced the same problem.
Any thoughts, as I am stumped.
