Can't update to 5.5.1

I've tried repeatedly to install 5.5.1, and when clicking the 'download' button on the update tab in the dashboard, I consistently get an internal server error 500. I saw that someone else had the same problem which turned out to be that their server ran out of memory, and thus I've changed the php.ini file on the Windows shared hosting at Godaddy to let php have more memory, but still the same problem.

Any ideas?

As a weird side note, even though the folders have all the right permissions on the site, I'm also unable to update Popup Pro, due to an error saying it's 'unable to backup old package directory to D:\Hosting\manynumbers\html/files/trash'

Could these problems be related?

Sorry I can't help with the update, but the permissions problem I have had before, ensure you have the ability to write from the server, usually apache.

For me thats 775, but for others its 777, if you apply it to the files folder recursively then attempt the Popup Pro update again.

Thanks so much for the reply Sean -- it was your post I'd seen previously that alerted me to the possible 'not enough RAM on the server' issue. I tried to update that by increasing the memory allotment to php, but was unable to, I think. If you perchance have a php5.ini file you could share, I could maybe try to upload that?

Any other ideas would be awesome too.

I will have a look and see what our php.ini looks like tomorrow at work.

Other then that though I am afraid, I am out of ideas I really struggle when it comes to servers and there properties.

Just to confirm, I have also had this issue trying to upgrade 3 sites on 1&1 hosting (500 error a few seconds after pushing update button). 2 sites on rackspace worked fine...

Unfortunately 1&1 give you no access to logs so I have no idea what the issue is....

My experience with 500 error updating on a 1&1 shared account is that the php process runs over 1&1's cpu time limit. There is also a thread that suggests memory limits may be exceeded:

The way round it is to do the upgrade manually. You can use ftp, ssh or the 1&1 control panel to upload the zipped C5.5.1, create the updates folder and unzip C5.5.1 in the appropriate subfolder.

You then need to visithttp://your_site.com/index.php/tools/required/upgrade/... to get the database upgraded.

As with any upgrade, make at least 2 backups first, disable and clear the cache. With a 5.4.x to 5.5.x upgrade, I have also found it best to switch the site theme to plain yogurt just in case the actual theme needs upgrading/fixing for 5.5 (you can get into a chicken and egg problem with theme upgrades)

This is most likely a memory issue - concrete5 is hogging a lot of memory above the allocated RAM. Asking your host to increase the RAM on your account should fix the problem
