Help! clean installs fail

ok, I give, I need some help from a bigger brain please. I have tried to do a clean install of version 5.6.0.2 and it fails every time when it gets to "installing Dashboard" and reports this:
"The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request".
The only error I find in the server is this:
"Premature end of script headers: index.php"
I then tried previous versions (ver 5.5.2.1) all the way back to ver 5.4.2.2 all failed until ver 5.4.2.2 which installed fine. I then attempted an upgrade to Ver 5.5.2.1 I get the same server error. but I can log into the site and the automatic update just sits there "looking for updates" and never stops. I have tried all the recommended Manual updates to no avail. Seems I can only get ver 5.4.2.2 to work. Any ideas.

was getting mod_fcgid: read data timeout in 45 seconds
so i modified my fcgid conf file under the apache conf.d area and restarted apache and it made it past the install.
