Upgrade from dashboard isn't working

Trying to upgrade from 5.5.2.1 to 5.6.3.3 and not having any luck.

The Upgrade dashboard lets me download the upgrade, but never switches over to help me install it.

I've tried mydomain/index.php/tools/required/upgrade but it keeps saying I'm on 5.5.2.1 and no need to update.

Do I need to go to 5.6 first? Also, when I try download the update again it says that 5.6.3.3 is already in the update directory but it is actually 5.6.3.2.

Tried to swap the concrete folders manually based on this page...

http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/how-tos/developers/manually-...

...and run the update script but I get this error message...

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/.../.../.../.../concrete/startup/config_check.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/php53/pear') in /.../.../.../.../_BMRC/concrete/dispatcher.php on line 17

I simplified the directory string to mask my server info.

Switching the concrete directories back and the site works and the script does too.
