Updating add ons that are no longer supported

I have an add on that is no longer supported or updated by the developer. Can I advertise the job to update this so that it can continue to be used on the existing sites until clients make the move to a new web site? There is no alternative add on with required function.
If I do commission these updates can the revised files be offered to others with this add on? This would be made available for free.

You can make whatever changes you like for your own use.

Even if unsupported/abandoned, the original addon remains the property of the original developer, so you would need their agreement to do anything further.

Would I be right in assuming that it is OK to share changes to the code on the forum or on the support page of the add on?

Yes, but be careful not to end up effectively sharing the entire addon or significant part of it, as that could amount to illegal distribution. Safest would be to just publish the changed lines or a diff.

Have you contacted the developer? Sometimes developers are happy for others to take over an addon they do not have time or inclination to maintain.
