Autonav functionality

Hi,
I'm learning to make a website using contrete5.
I have two test-sites : one with the standard demo-site, one with an empty site.
The demo site's navigation menu has horizontal choices, with a dropdown for sub-items.
On the empty site I added an autonav-block and I added a number of pages with subpages. But there the autonav displays the pages vertically. The subpages are visible when you click on a item, but again in a vertical way.
The two site have the same theme. I thought the theme would take care of something like the look and feel of the autonav, but clearly it does not (I think).
What am I missing ?
TIA
Files : autonav-OK : the demo-site
autonav-bad : the empty site

- As well as theme, you may need to select a block template.
- The default elemental theme formats the autonav differently depending on where it is on the page. You first image looks like it is in a global header area. the second looks like it could be in a main area.
