Can't Edit Homepage - Footer_Required, Header_Required problems

I am a VERY basic user of Concrete 5. Will also admit I made so STUPID mistakes in that I did not backup working versions of my site before messing around with it. A the moment...
I cannot edit my homepage (edit menu does not show up).
I also get header_required.php and footer_required.php error messages occasionally.

In an attempt to speed up the site loading -- and after googling -- I copied the footer/header_required files from concrete5/elements to application/elements and added some suggested code.

That's when the problems started. I tried deleting the application/elements versions, but then they are "missing" -- even though they didn't exist once upon a time and things worked then.

I'm hoping there are some header/footer_required files somewhere I can copy into the directories... or copies of the code that can be pasted inside... but not anticipating being that lucky.

Thought I'd check here before re-initiating the banging head on desk procedure.

IF ANY NEWBIES ARE READING THIS -- BACK UP FILES BEFORE YOU SCREW UP FILES! :)

You can try going directly into the dashboard at yoursite.com/dashboard
- Clear the cache
- Disable the overrides cache (while you are developing)

Thank you!

Apparently I screwed things up even further.

Tried doing a restore via host (Dreamhost) -- now page isn't working. -sigh-

I'll wait a bit... clear browser history, etc,,, and see what happens, if anything.

At this point, might be easier to destroy and rebuild.

EDIT: Just re-restored back to the original files and at least the site is back up now. Will try your above suggestions.

EDIT: Tried your suggestions. Same basic problem. I can go to any page OTHER than the homepage and edit as per usual. When I go to the homepage, there's no edit bar. If I go back to one of the other pages, the edit bar is there.

I discovered a work-around. I can placehttp://www.MyWebsite.com/index.php?cID=1... inthe url and it let's me edit. However, I'd still like to know what's broken and fix it.

Will keep researching and post any updates here.

**** SOLVED **** hopefully

Went to this link https://legacy-documentation.concrete5.org/tutorials/the-block-does-... and started down the list. Under clear the browser cache, I did the "hitting F5" a couple of times... called up the site... logged in... navigated to the homepage via the site map... editing bar is there.

Will post later to see if this ended up being a long-term solution.
