Change defaults and output for an inactive theme?

This is the first time I've worked on a C5 project that uses a 2nd theme for certain pages. How do you edit the page default output and add default blocks to an inactive theme?

Going via the dash only allows you to edit the currently active theme.

As long as the area names for the 2 themes are the same you should be able to add blocks to the defaults regardless of what the look is when you're doing it and it will show up in that area in both themes.
