Customising form block

OK. I've followed the tutorial on codeblog but I am lost when it comes to php coding.
I want to create a form with a 1px line between the questions/fields and the fields to be coloured light grey.
I would also like to line up the left and right hand edges of all the fields. Easily done with a table but aaarggghh! in php.
Can anyone take me through this?
