Date Navigation Block does not allow filtering by date

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but there do not appear to be any settings to filter the block's output by date.
I have a news page which uses the Date Navigation block on the side, and Page List block to show news items, filtered by "Before Today" (which is confusing text, as it really means "Before Now"). So articles posted with a future date for later consumption of course do not show up until their time.
However, if an article is dated for the following month, the Date Navigation block shows that future month in the list of links. Selecting it of course shows an empty list, since the Page List block filters them out.
Seems like the Date Navigation block should have all the filtering options that the Page List block has.
