How to add the "is_featured" page attribute?

Permalink 2 users found helpful
Nooooobie here, who is more designer than developer. I may be denser than concrete, so my deepest apologies to everyone in advance. I am very excited about concrete5 and what it will do for my clients and my business. There is a lot to learn, but fortunately also a lot of good information available from people who are a lot smarter than me. I have seen a lot of posts regarding the "is_featured" page attribute, but for whatever reason cannot for the life of me figure out simply how to create the attribute. What am I missing? Also, just curious why this is not part of the standard install?

Log into your site as the admin. Go to the Dashboard, then click the "Pages and Themes" sidebar link. Then click the "Attributes" link at the top. From the dropdown menu at the bottom, choose "checkbox", then click the "Go" button. (See first attached screenshot).

Now type "is_featured" into the "Handle" box, and whatever you want into the "Name" box (I recommend "Is Featured" just to keep it simple). Don't worry about any of the other stuff on that page. Now click the "Add Attribute" button. (See second attached screenshot).

So now the attribute is installed, but you'll need to set it on the pages you want to mark as featured, which you can do when you first create a page by choosing "Is Featured" (or whatever you named the attribute when creating it above) from the "**Add Attribute" dropdown menu underneath the name, date and description of the new page. If it's a page that already exists, go to that page, click "Edit Page" in the toolbar, click "Properties" in the toolbar, then click the "Custom Attributes" tab and choose the "Is Featured" item from the "**Add Attribute" dropdown.

Hope that helps.

And to answer your other question (why isn't it part of standard install).... I have no idea. Probably just an oversight. Or maybe they consider this more of an "advanced feature" that they don't want to clutter up the attributes list with? Or maybe they thought it would confuse people because it doesn't actually do anything unless you're using the page list block with that one special feature enabled in it. Who knows... good question though!

Thank you so much for the quick and clear response. Seems intuitive enough once you know where to go. It may not seem like much, but it is a big help!

I also don't see a good reason (beside less clutter) why the built-in attributes shouldn't be created on install. Does anyone know why this decision was made?
See this for a list of attributes:

For an idiot like me who's got a lot of questions, and who gets more confused when he reads smart peoples' answers, this was THE MOST HELPFUL response I've ever come across in all my forum searching. The problem was well articulated, and the answer was even better.

Kudos to you.

For the current version of concrete5 you go to
1 ->Dashboard
2 ->Page & Themes, Attributes

You add in this page an attribute in the bottom of the page, there you select 'Boolean'

There you do the next things:
1 ->in Handle you type is_featured
2 ->in Name: Is Featured
3-> Set: Navigation and indexing
4-> Check all the check-boxes

Thanks for your update on the answer.
May I know can I put a thumbnail image in the page list for the featured page?
If yes, could you please teach me how to do so?

Thanks in advanced.

Thank you for the quick response and the link.
I followed the Steps and still can't see anything after I added the page list. Is there anything else that I need to do in order to make it work?

I don't know, you'll need to ask the developer of that addon (check the Form, Questions, or Support links on the sidebar of its marketplace page).

Boolean is not an option in my list.

What should I select? The following are my options...
Text, Text Area, Checkbox, Date/Time, Image/File, Number, Rating, Select, User Picker, Multi User Picker, Time, Multi Date, Event Color Picker.

Thank you

Checkbox is the same as Boolean I believe
