lost again! footer editing and lost dashboard

I'm really getting frustrated with C5. It was presented to me as a site that could be updated by user and edited with some experience. It has proven to be an exercise in frustration as it is such a twitchy cms.

I have looked over previous questions I've posted and do find that i am coming through as not very knowledgeable, but most questions have been pretty basic, and I have built from finding answers (or generally not finding them).

The last issue, before I begin to look for another website platform, has to do with a simple change to the footer code in the stripped theme. I was just trying to eliminate the "sign in to edit this site' line at the bottom of the page, and ended up with a parse error for line 18, and no way to access the dashboard to reinstall the theme.

I could really use some help on this one gentlemen and ladies.

Stripped is a 5.6 theme, and it's free.

It sounds like you changed one of the files (probably one of the footer files from the theme.)
I suggest you undo your changes.
You can get the theme again if needed (it's free) and compare the files if needed.

Also to access the dashboard, you can try to enter the url directly:
yoursite/index.php/dashboard.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Willem. I know I really do sound like a bonehead when I try to get help for design problems with C5. It IS a journey, and if I didn't find it interesting I'd just have a basic blog.

I solved the riddle by reinstalling the theme package.

I learned something on the way- the theme wouldn't reinstall until I renamed the old package with the footer.php file I invariably broke.

The theme reinstalled and I have the same site as before, with access.

I guess I'll throw this out if anyone can answer the original question, and the reason why I ran into all this trouble and did not get the same result as before when I eliminated the line of text at the bottom of the page.

In the past all I did was delete the 'sign in to edit this site' text from the theme footer and all was well.

Best

Stephen

(PS- I can see why one needs to hire a professional web designer. thing is, one needs to be able to make adjustments to layout, etc, other than content without having to have the expense of paying for these kind of updates. I have been looking at Wordpress as a platform, but feel the flexibility of design is not there. Anyone on this? I noted an earlier post where there was a lot of discussion on comparisons between C5 and Wordpress.)

Good that its resolved.
It could have been caused by changing a bit more than just the 'sign in' bit. Since re-installing the theme solved the problem.

Something else:
Maybe you want to look into adopting 5.7. So much has changed since 5.6...
I've build a few sites with 5.6, but didn't work with it for quite some time now.
5.7 is great and 8.0 is on our doorsteps and will be upgradable from 5.7.

You probably will find problems when migrating from 5.6 to 5.7, and it takes time and effort to get used to 5.7, but in the long run, it might be worth it for you.

There is a migrating tool you could test:
