Trouble adding incoming files

I am adding small files to concrete5 (5.4.0.5) using the incoming folder regularly and it has been working like a charm so far.
Now I have trouble importing a file of size 48.415.996 Bytes. It lists under "Add incoming" as usual. When I hit "Add Files" the page takes two seconds to load and shows the "Add incoming" dialog again. There is no success nor failure message, but the file does never appear in the file list.
One thing I discovered is that every time I try that concrete5 creates a new (random?) numbered subsubdirectory under files containing an incomplete version of my file with a size of exactly 10.485.760 Bytes = 10 MB.
Does anyone have an idea what could cause this problem?
