Does block developer also include any additional functionality

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hello,
Does this package also include the functionality of Package designer?

I'm currently investigating options for a new site and the suggestions I'm putting together indicate that block developer is the same as Block designer + block designer pro (combined $100).

I'm curious to know if any additional functionality has been added to the package that raises it above the other two addons.

Thank you

Hi Sean,

This package does not something like Package Designer, no. However, you can let Block Developer install a Block Type into any package you have in your concrete5 website/install. Most likely, you will create 1 package for your (new) concrete5 site, which includes your theme and Block Types. So with Block Developer, you can install them inside that package.

I'd advice not to have many packages, since concrete5 has to loop over them and see what each does and process all that. So it's a better call to group them in one package, if those things belong together. If I have a project for 1 client and that client has a theme and block specific for that theme, I'd group them in a single package/Add-On.

As for additional functionality, that's mostly the very simple config.php file and up-to-date code. With Block Designer, it's not as easy to add a new field in and make it all compatible. Also, code could get outdated with Block Designer where if the core of concrete5 changes, I can update Block Developer and all your Block Types created with Block Developer change/update along. That could be PHP code, but also how the form looks. More additions are that you can group fields into tabs, so you don't have 1 looooong list of fields in your form. So group them into "Basic" tab, "Advanced" tab or "Items" tab or whatever you need. I've tried to get as much on the marketplace and in the screenshots, but it's always hard to be telling every single thing.

There are some fields (Number, Youtube, Stacks, Country, Smart Link and Font Awesome) that are included in Block Designer (Pro), but not in Block Developer yet though. I will be adding them along the way, I just need some more people using it and requesting stuff right now. Since there aren't any requests yet, it isn't on top of my priority list. And mostly there's a workaround too for a thing like "Number" (you can do that as a "Text" box) and "Youtube" (you can do that as URL field) so...

Hope this covers most what you need and then some. Let me know if you still have any questions or hesitate about what you'd need!

Kind regards,

Ramon

Thank you for the additional information.

Taking a look it appears it's only possible to add tabs in the block developer add-on. I really like that ability as it helps separate out some of the additional functionality we require.

Something I see as a big plus over the other two as it's something that's taken me ages to do in the past.
