Block disappears after selecting a template

I can add a List Files from Set block to my page and using no template (or the included table template), I can see a list of files displayed on the page. If I then update the custom template to use one of the JL templates, the block disappears, or rather the content of the block does, you can still see the dotted line around the block, so it can be selected and edited again..
I'm not getting any errors on the page or in error logs.

- Does the set actually contain any image files?
- If caching is enabled, you will probably need to clear the cache after saving the page. This arises from an annoying feature of the c5 block cache being filled while the page is still in edit mode, so context dependent content is evaluated in the wrong mode during 'cache on save'.
