Just for thumbnails or original images?

Does this just work for thumbnails or does it compress all of the original images to save on overall disk space?

It's configurable. It can optimize a) original files, b) thumbs, and c) cache images.
I don't see any settings to compress JPGs, down (ie. pixels, compression level %). How does it decide how to compress?
It depends per file type and integration. But there should be a minimum of quality loss. Also, some space is gained by removing meta data.
