I don't recall there being thumbnail support in the 5.6 version, the features should be the same.
Are you perhaps thinking of a custom template for the block that you either created or found somewhere?
I know johnthefish has some additional 5.6 templates for the block for example:https://www.concrete5.org/marketplace/addons/image-list-templates/...
It shouldn't be too difficult to create a custom template for the block that outputs the thumbnails. I haven't got any code handy at the moment for 5.7, but if you get stuck I can have a look.
