this plugin in no way replaces mailchimp. It performs a single task and that is to push the registration data into a mailchimp list. anything further needs to be handled by other systems.
it sounds like you may need to give them access to mailchimp afterall. Likewise I've not checked out the alternative plugins you mentioned so cant really offer a review in that way.
