thanks for the quick answer the other day. as for the top level items the same as the first child can that's cool if that's what you have on your site at c5extras.com where the name of the trigger that drops the menu isn't a link and has a different name than the first child. Can you please confirm?

Yes, the top level link and the first child don't need to have the same name - that's fine. I also use the Mega Menu on c5extras.com in that same scenario.
