truncated characters not working

Hi Dave,
I think their might be a little bug in the truncated characters function. I can't get this option to work with or without custom templates. I've tried on 4 different themes, including 'elemental', It keeps on snapping back to zero characters when activating the function in the pagelist plus.
Can you take a look?
