Z distance and Shadow darkness

Hi...I LOVE this add-on..very tight!
2 questions for you:
What does the Z-distance do as I cannot see any differences when I mess with it?
and
What is the number range for the shadow darkness? When I adjust it, I barely notice a difference in the bottom shadow.

have tried setting the Shadow Darkness to, -20, 0.5, 50, 100 and 200
I don't see any change.
Interestingly http://performancec5.com/reviews/piecemaker-gallery/... has an example of a nice shadow
