Hi

Is there any way to add an Unsubscribe link to a newsletter so that the user by clicking on it is simply unsubscribed from the newsletter list?

Short answer: Yes, but...

The user attribute "Receive toesslab - Newsletter" is taking care of that. As you probably noticed, the Recipient List is empty if no member of your site has that attribute set to "Yes".

So a solution can be to add a link heading to the users profile. Set the user attribute "Receive toesslab - Newsletter" to:
- Editable in Profile.
- Editable and Required in Profile.
- Show on Registration Form.
- Require on Registration Form.
(Will be fixed in the next release)

Then add a link in your footer linking to the login page/users account page with a little message saying that they have to set that attribute to "No".

The time of writing this I noticed there could be better ways to handle that. I thought it would be a flexible & concrete5-like solution.
I'm open for suggestions...

Hi

Thank you for your reply. Your solution also came to my mind, but rather I was thinking about the possibility of clicking on a link in newsletter that would initiate sending an email to a member with a link that deactivates Receive toesslab - Newsletter attribute. People who will use my website are mostly older people. For them to log in and find the right option in the appropriate section of the menu is a little difficult task. Do you think that such functionality could appear in another version of your add-on?

Hi, I would like also a simple feature like suggested...
for user just click on link at bottom of newsletter ("usubscribe") would be perfect !!

I'll think about changing the whole subscribe/unsubscribe feature.

To be frank, I have no idea at the moment how this could be handled more simply. And I'm not talking about the coding part. It should be simple and easy for the user to subsribe/unsubscribe.

One possibility could be to install a single page along with the addon, where users can simply check/uncheck a box or so.

As said before I'm open to suggestions!

Hi, just a suggestion with in mind to keep it simple
- create an empty .txt file (like "unsubscribelist.dat") somewhere on concrete.
- when user clicks on bottom of newsletter message on email, lets say "unsubscribe", automatically add his email in "unsubscribelist.dat"
- create on installation a job to update all users in "unsubscribelist.dat", and the clear file (this to process unsubscribe list manually)
- update the sending newsletter job to include previuous job (this for security reasons, so you are sure to clear before sending)

could it work ?

Looking from the perspective of the user, it would be best if user did not have to create a member account to subscribe to the newsletter. A lot of people including myself when they have to create an account just simply resign. One more password, one more login, one more web address to remember. I think that a separate site would be a good idea for not registered members. Each subscribed newsletter could be unsubscribe there. The registered members could unsubscribe after logging in to their account. I am not a programmer and I do not know how complicated or possible it would be to implement such functionality. Do you think it would be possible?

Hi there

The basic idea/concept was to have a newsletter tool for a c5 site containing registered members.

The whole logic of the addon is based on the fact that a site has members using their accounts in a way or another.
If your site members don't visit the site to do things concerning their account or other features which are member based, I don't think this addon is the right thing then.
So it would be a complete different concept to do it based on a site which doesn't have registered users or user groups. How for example that "non-user-site" knows the members to send a mailing to?
That said site should then be able to kind of collect members from the other site having members or storing email addresses in another way which is really complicated and from a logic point of view is not feasable as c5 already has a good member management.

Observing it from that point of view I have to say no to that proposition. Sry....

Anyway I think having found a solution to make that "unsubscribe Link" feature as easy as possible:

- The user attribute "Receive toesslab - Newsletter" will be changed to a simple check box instead of a dropdown.
- This checkbox will be checked by default.
- There will be a new dashboard page called "Subscriptions" where you as admin may easily change subscriptions by mass assignment or one by one.
- An unsubscribe link will be added automatically to every newsletter.
- When a user wants to unsubscribe he/she simply clicks the link in the newsletter mail to be automatically unsubscribed.
- Therefor a new single page will be installed to confirm the unsubscription.
- That way users will still be able to change their prefernces on-site (in their account)

As you may imagine, this will give me quite a lot of work so please be patient meanwhile.

Thank you very much for showing me your point of view. This helps me understand the mechanism of interaction of toesslab.ch - Newsletter with Concrete5. It's very valuable.
It's a great add-on, and I believe that not only I but other users will wait patiently for your next improvements.
