V8n and Newbie questions?

Permalink Browser Info Environment
First of all your theme looks beautiful and it was recommended to me on the C5 forum.

My first question is about the upcoming version 8 of concrete5. Will your theme and license be up-gradable? If so will there be an additional fee?

The next question is abut support. I write control system software for industrial clients. I am new to Concrete5 and dabble in web development whenever opportunities present themselves. Are you able to provide some guidance or tutorials that would enable me to get the most out of your theme? If not I can work with a free theme such as Clonamental or Fruitful until I have knowledge and confidence.

In any case your work is beaqutiful.

Hi Rick,

Thank you for your kind words and I am glad you are taking interest in using Concrete5.

As for your question, Concrete5's version 8 can be upgraded from version 7 as opposed to upgrading version 6 to version 7. What this means is all themes and addons for 5.7 will still be compatible for version 8. No fees or anything :)

I would love to help you out. But I would suggest you play around with the built in core theme (elemental) packed along with the concrete5 installation. You don't necessarily need to master it but just understand the basics like adding blocks and what not. But if you want to dive in immediately, thats also fine but at least read through the docs herehttp://framework57.c5box.com/index.php/documentation...

All the best,
James

James,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll take your advice and do my homework before moving forward with your theme.

I happened across this websitehttp://www.eyeos.com/ which caught my eye. So I asked about it on the forum ...

http://www.concrete5.org/community/forums/chat/is-video-background-...

and someone highly recommend your theme.

I have a quick question. I am browsing through video clips I could potentially use. Is there a preferred resolution? Perhaps I should just grab the highest one available and down convert if necessary?

Hi Rick,

I've set the video background to auto fit any video resolution, Yeah, go for the best quality and down convert it to maybe around <5mb. If your on OSX, use the handbrake app.

James

Hi James,

I have been doing my homework and feel I am ready to make a go at it.

I am going to make a fresh install of concrete to be sure I haven't made any mischief while experimenting around. I read somewhere that Framework comes with it's own sample content so then should I install concrete with or without it's sample content? It would be great if I could start with something like your demo.

Also, in your demo what is the size of the banner images on the non-home pages?

Thanks again James for the beautiful work.; I'm ready to rock-n-roll. ;)

Hi Rick,

So glad to hear it and yes my theme has sample content. You can install conrete5 with or without content and my sample content will just overwrite what's currently in it.

The inner page banners will also auto fit any images added to it. So, you can basically add in any resolution you want.

When you get started, please let me know and I'll try to help you as best as I can. Also, don't hesitate to ask me for help.

Good luck and all the best,
James

James, I have a couple of questions.

1) The drop-down mobile menu on the home page is difficult to read. I think this is because the I have a dark background. It looks fine on the other pages. Can the home page header opacity be adjusted separately from the other pages or do you have any other ideas?

2) I am having some difficulty formatting the home page text. The attached file shows what I am trying to achieve. Whats the best way to accomplish this sort of thing where fonts, font sizes, and text location are controlled?

3) The documentation mentions that many google fonts are packaged with the theme but how to choose and use them?

4) The video doesn't play on my android phone. Should it play there? Should a static image be specified for mobile devices?

One more question ...

I noticed that the menu and text on my home page is enlarged compared to the demo website. I would prefer my site to look more like the demo. Can you tell me why that is and what I could do about it?

Hi Rick,

Your site is looking good. I especially like the background video. Sorry it took me some time to reply. I'll try to answer each of your questions the best that I can.

1. The theme comes with customization options found in settings > design > customization. Here you'd be able to change a lot of the elements you have on your site including the nav. Look for the nav and adjust the opacity of the dropdowns.

2. I can't seem to open the file you've attached. What I usually do is enable rich text editor on the dashboard and just use a content block to apply some text. And since rich text editor is enabled, you'd have additional options inside the content block to change the colors of the font. Heading sizes and font family can be changed in the color customization panel.

3. Yes, you can edit the fonts in the customization panel.

4. What android device and version are you using. I have issues currently with IOS since they are really strict with videos eating away bandwidth. I'll try to see if some android version is posing the same problem.

5. I tried comparing the two and the size seems similar on my end. Perhaps you zoomed in on your site accidentaly with the browser? Can you provide me with screenshots comparing the two.

I hope this was helpful. Please keep me posted

Warm regards,
James

Hi James,

I am making progress and the home page is starting to shape up. Your comments were very helpful.

"Your site is looking good. I especially like the background video. ..."
Thank you for the kind words. I got the video from hubblesite.org. Your comments were timely and helpful so don;t worry about that.

1. "The theme comes with customization options"
I found the theme settings and was able to adjust the opacity to make the mobile menu look better. The real problem was with the large white text bleeding through. So making the background less transparent helps a lot. I may try using a darker background color as well.

2. "I can't seem to open the file you've attached."
I don't know why you can't open the attached file. It's just a PNG. Anyway I uploaded it to my website and you can see it at the link below. However, I already have your theme looking better ;)

Ok I enabled the rich text editor. But the text sizes in the drop menu only go up to 30px which is too small. So I opened the HTML window and adjusted them manually as can be seen at mitek-automation.com. This looks fine on the PC however the fonts don't scale down for smaller view ports. I used the existing block so perhaps it's not the content type block you spoke of? Perhaps I should be using pt or % or some other method to specify font sizes? Do you have ideas or suggestions?

3. "Yes, you can edit the fonts in the customization panel"
I haven't tried this yet but I did see some settings labeled Font-1, Font-2, etc. Is this what you are referring to?

5. ":I tried comparing the two and the size seems similar on my end."
Yes. My browser was zoomed in on my site but not on the demo. ;)

6. I have a new question. About the text at the top of the main page. I would also like to modify the paragraph spacing a bit. I believe this can be done with a little CSS but how or where is that done with C5 and your theme. I don't really want to do something that will be wiped clean when an update comes along.

Thanks James. The theme and support is well worth the price. I appreciate your help and mentoring very much.

Thanks
Rick

A couple more questions ...

7. When I the viewport is shrunk down to mobile size the words :find Solutions" are split on two lines. How can I increase the space between these two lines? The other text has about the right spacing?

8. I noticed that tonight my C5 installation is kind of sluggish. I know it's not your theme but what can you tel me about this from your experience. Is this a sign of needing a better hosting company or does this happen occasionally?

Hello Rick,

On the customization panel there is a heading category which holds all H1 to H5 headings. Here you can pretty much adjust the colors, size, opacity and family.

If you need to add a custom CSS, go to the customization panel and look for the "custom css" button on the very bottom. You can add as much CSS and media queries here without worrying about it being wiped during updates. You can also specify if the changes are applied to the current page or site-wide.

7. I would suggest inline css on the html when on the content block? Add a line-height attribute with a value of 180% should work. Let me know if you need more help with this.

8. What specs does your hosting have? Another factor would be the latency between your ISP and hosting. I also had issues with site being sluggish because of a slow sql.

I'm going to try and check some android devices for the video issue. If android is trying to do what apple is doing, I might just add a android fallback for all mobile. Sorry for the hassle.

Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Glad you are doing great progress. :)

Kind regards,
James
