This has something to do with there being no background images set via the core design tool. In the presets we can ship with the theme, there has to be a variable available to except an image should a user want to add one. The downside of this is that if no images are used then the URL appears broken.

Currently there does not appear to be a solution other than uploading maybe a transparent 1x1 pixel image to each option... not ideal at all. We can take an other look to see if there are any further solutions but as this is coded to work with core functionality in the required way there may not be a lot we can do.
