Updating 5.4.1.1, but database will not update to match

I'm currently updating an old site using concrete 5. It's currently running 5.4.1.1.

I'm trying to manually update the site incrimentally- IE: going from 5.4.1.1 to 5.4.2 to 5.2.2, etc- but the database is not mirroring the website when a new update is applied.

Has anyone else run into a problem similar to this, and, if so, how did you overcome it?

do the upgrades report they work ok?

Do you have any overrides of core files?

Sorry, it took so long to reply: I've been trying to find a way to make this work- to no avail.

Upgrades to 5.4.2 and 5.4.2.2 seem to be fine on the surface- HOWEVER, the SITE_APP_VERSION in the database still reflects my starting point: 5.4.1.1. It's only when I get to 5.5.0 that I get a generic error that breaks the site. ("A database error occurred while processing this request.")

I do not have any overrides of the core.

I have been following as much of the documentation as I can, such as the message here:http://www.concrete5.org/documentation/how-tos/developers/troublesh... -- to date, nothing has worked, including manual in-place upgrades.
