updating software?

Hello,
again I am no web developer and I have been finally able to update a lot of the pages on the website that the original web developer relinquished all of his duties on and now it is up to me to try and figure out how to update the software that should have been updated while he was being paid to update and maintain the website! If I understand correctly there have been over 12 updates since our website was built!! I am running 5.4.0.5 and I need to update to the 5.4.2.2 in order to be able to edit pictures I am afraid to update because since I don't know much about web developing and I see and read the stories of HELP after updating I am afraid I would not be able to figure out how to fix any errors can someone help me??

Thanks

I think we need a little bit of informations about your installation.
Are you using any add-on or template?
Are you using any custom add-on or template?

In this cases i think that the best choise is to try it out on a test machine or on a test subdomain.

You can download a backup of your Database and restore it on your local machine.

Or you can create a subdomain like test.mydomain.com and install a fresh C5 into that (generally all Hosting services allow that)

There are a bunch of ways to be sure to do not loose everything.

"You can download a backup of your Database and restore it on your local machine." My server has this so in reality I would not need to right? As long as I stay within the time frame that they allow for being able to back up the site?

So if I would go to my website click on update to next version and if something does not work I can go to my server and tell them to restore to an hour ago? Am I understanding this right?

How can I do this? So your saying if I install a fresh current C5 site then I can transfer the old outdated site into the new current?

Thanks

Yes. but I generally prefer to make tests on my local machines. There I've the full control.

For files i think yes. For DB it depends on the Hosting Provider.
You can do that by hand. Copying your concrete5 folder to a another one and download a backup of the db from the C5 interface "Backup".

This is a solution to avoid stopping the site for a while and to do not create a local development environment.
You can do that from your Hosting Provider interface. The way to do that depends on the interface chosen from your provider.
At work we generally allways have a "test" website for this things.
If it was me I'll take on a test machine the full backup of your site. If the update works I'll make the same operation on the real site.

Here is a guide about how to manually update to a new release.
