Experiences with setting up, using Stripe, customer service, etc.

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hello,

I am considering using Stripe, however I've recently read some bad reviews. One review was about setting up their account, double checking twice if the account was active and be told it was and ready to accept payments, and then a few days after first establishing an account, finally accepted a few charges. After the payments were made, Stripe then shut the account down stating that some bank said this particular business was somehow related to another so Stripe shut the account down. They did not proactively pass on this information, and seems like a mess.

With that said, when I read stuff like this it makes me hesitant, but before I make a decision to turn away from Stripe, I'd like to hear anyone's actual reviews who are currently (or have used) Stripe.

For example, can you actually set it up to ensure they verify the CVC code and verify billing address, prior to actually charging the card? How is customer service/support?

Thank you very much for your time,

Howdy concrete5art,

I don't really have any feedback about Stripe itself that I can pass on to you, positive or negative, as my focus has really been from a developer's point of view and not as a Stripe customer as such.
I know my add-on works correctly and I've had positive feedback of this, but beyond this I've not heard anything about Stripe itself.

I have had some communication with Stripe on a technical level, and I've found this to be very professional and helpful. Perhaps it's like any larger company, there are always going to be some customers that are unhappy and are going to be very vocal about it. In you the review you mentioned, it's hard to judge as we wouldn't know the full story - perhaps the business was in fact breaching some banking regulation, Stripe did contact them but they missed, who knows!

I think the main thing to do here is get in touch with Stripe with your concerns and questions and see what their response is.

For your two particular questions, I know that Stripe does use the CVC code and billing address as part of it's checks.

Whether it definitively rejects or accepts cards with invalid CVC is down to a setting in your Stripe account itself.
See: https://support.stripe.com/questions/what-controls-for-fraud-prevent...
and,https://support.stripe.com/questions/cvc-or-avs-failed-but-payment-s...

CVC checks are quite complicated however, as it comes down to how individual banks process things. I believe some banks will still allow cards to be processed even if CVC checks fail (hence where there is an admin setting to always reject cards that fail CVC).

For reference I've used their embedded form ('checkout') scripts to accept and process cards, meaning I haven't done anything custom with the processing - I simply process orders on the response I get from Stripe about the payment and don't add in any further checks myself. Perhaps useful to know if you contact Stripe with any questions.

Hope that helps

Ryan,

Thank you very much for such a quick response. You don't know how comfortable that makes me feel already with regard to trying your add-on. I will follow your guidance and contact Stripe directly regarding my other concerns and will be in touch shortly regarding your add-on specifically.

Thank you so much!
