Optional fields get flagged as invalid

Hi,
I have a formidable form with both mandatory and optional input fields. If I leave all of them blank, they all get flagged invalid (and get a red box shadow), even if some of them are optional. In fact, it seems the flagging starts at the first empty mandatory field, and marks all following fields with the class .error, when it only should mark the mandatory fields.
I hope I'm not missing something here...
