this is a good question.

I am not totally sure about this, but the importer "should" be setting the publish date according to the publish date of the source. If that is the case, then sorting by most recent should suffice.

If for some reason it did not...then sadly you will need to go and set the publish date for each one.

I will contact the dev team for the WP importer and see if that is correct, and if not, can they add it.

Jeremy, one of the developers of the WPimport is telling me that it does in-fact set the pub date too the wordpress post date on import. so you should be able to sort by "most recent". if not, check your source XML file for date malice.
