tcPhotoGallery needs a bunch of information about each image to operate properly, so it's not really practical or valuable for it to just scan a directory. What you can do, however, is batch upload a large number of photos into one or more file sets and then create and import an XML file (or files) that have all of the information for each image. The XML format is simple and can be created by hand without much difficulty. There are instructions included with the package.
