How would you go about making the slideshow responsive? The other content on the site responds, is there a reason for this block to follow different rules?

first, sorry for the late reply!
You mean the default Slideshow block? I'm afraid this block is not responsive. I'd recommend you using any other slider from the marketplace, such as the Whale Nivo Slider, which is available for free:
