Simple URL Parameter question

The URL parameter option for each field...does that accept a parameter being passed in the URL or does it create a parameter to pass in a URL?

Let say you set URL parameter for a field to, say, "name." You can then go towww.www.example.com/my-form-page?name=Justin... and that field would automatically be populate with "Justin" (in this case).
