PHP in the template?

Just wondering if there's any way of putting scripting or something in the templates? The reason I ask is if you wanted to have a different class for every second table row (for example), to make it more readable (different background color every second row). Or, if there's another way of accomplishing this...

I realize I can do this with CSS, but it's only CSS3, so all those IE users won't see my nice styling...

Ideas?
