Can't access single_page, and another question

Hi!
So first of all, I can't even seem to access the single_page that displays all the testimonials.
I already have a page called "Testimonials" on my site, so I went ahead and changed the canonical URL to testimonials-1 for testing purposes -- now I get "no page found" at http://mysite.com/index.php/testimonials...
After a little playing around, including removing and reinstalling the block, the /testimonials page now takes me to a blank page which, strangely, is a default "testimonials" pagetype from the site. Still, no testimonials showing up on it though, and I can edit it as if it was one of MY predefined testimonials pagetype pages. I think I'm encountering a bug with my already existing "testimonials" page AND pagetype. So confuddled.
I tried editing the /packages/defunct_testimonials/single_pages/testimonials.php, but no matter what changes I make (including deleting all the contents of the file), no change is reflected on mysite.com/index.php/testimonials. Obviously the wrong testimonials page is being displayed.
The reason I'm interested in looking at the single_page file is so that I can display several random testimonials on my page at once, preferably in two separate, equal-sized columns. I tried adding multiple instances of the testimonials block, but sometimes they both load the same testimonial. I want to avoid this duplication, but still load random testimonials each time the page is refreshed.
